Cesário Costa has distinguished himself as one of the most active Portuguese conductors of his generation. After completing his Piano studies, in Paris, decided to take an Orchestral Conducting Course and a Master’s degree at the Würzburg University of Music.Recently, he took a PhD at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, with a thesis "Noble et Sentimental: Pedro de Freitas Branco and the question of interpretation in the orchestral music of Maurice Ravel". In 1997, he was holder of the Bayreuther Festspielen scholarship and he won the III Fundação Oriente International Competition for Young Conductors and has been invited to conduct countless national and international orchestras. His repertoire spans from the Baroque to Contemporary, including over one-hundred and thirty pieces which have been performed for the first time. However, as well as an orchestra conductor, he has carried out other teaching and music programming roles at different institutions. He was President of the Metropolitana/Association of Music, Education and Culture, an institution which is managed by the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa (where he was also the Artistic Director), Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra, Escola Profissional Metropolitana and Conservatório da Metropolitana. He was the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor for the Orquestra do Algarve, Orquestra Clássica do Sul, Orquestra Clássica de Espinho, Orquestra de Câmara Musicare, Orquestra Bomtempo, chief conductor of OrchestrUtópica and Artistic Director of In Spiritum – Porto's Music Festival. At the same time, he has held teaching roles at different schools and was a professor at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. He is currently a Integrated Researcher at CESEM (Centre for Study of Sociology and Aesthetics of Music), Artistic Director of the Coliseu do Porto’s Promenade Concerts, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Orquestra Sinfónica Ensemble and Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Orquestra Municipal de Sintra - D. Fernando II.

In the last few years, Cesário Costa has conducted, to name a few, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Berliner Symphoniker, Nürnberger Symphoniker, Göteborg Opera Orchestra, Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto - Casa da Música, Orquestra Clássica da Madeira, Orquestra da Extremadura, Orquesta Sinfónica de Múrcia, Orchestra Sinfonica di Bari, Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, Opole Philharmonic, Olsztyn Filharmonia, Filharmonia Sudecka, Filharmonia Rzeszów, Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra, Romanian Radio Chamber Orchestra, New Russia State Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro, Orquestra Sinfônica do Theatro da Paz, Orquestra Sinfônica Heliópolis, Orquesta de Câmara de Bellas Artes, Orquesta Sinfónica de Monterrey, Orquesta Sinfónica de Michoacan and Orquesta Sinfónica de Santa Fé.

In the field of contemporary music, he has performed with different groups, such as the Remix Orquestra, Ensemble für Neue Musik, Arhus Sinfonietta, the Plural Ensemble and the Barcelona Modern Project. He has taken part in countless Music Festivals, including Atlantic Waves (London), Aberdeen Music Festival (Scotland), Arhus Music Festival (Denmark), Neerpelt Music Festival (Belgium), Dresden Music Festival (Germany), Murcia Music Festival (Spain), and (in Portugal) Estoril, Sintra, Póvoa do Varzim, Espinho, Coimbra, Leiria and Mafra Music Festivals.

He has performed in Spain, France, Andorra, Germany, Scotland, Belgium, the UK, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Macedonia, Poland, Latvia, Romania, Albania, Malaysia, Brazil, Mexico, Cabo Verde, Mozambique, China, Turkey, Serbia, Russia, Argentina and Canada, his main concern always being to publicize national pieces in the programmes he performs. In Portugal, he has collaborated with the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, the Casa da Música, the Teatro da Trindade, the Teatro Nacional São João, the São Luiz Teatro Municipal, the Centro Cultural de Belém, the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, the Fundação de Serralves, the National Ballet Company of Portugal and the Portuguese Contemporary Dance Companyamong many other institutions. In recent years, he has worked with the majority of contemporary Portuguese composers, on operatic and orchestral premieres, both in Portugal and abroad.

He has collaborated with soloists such as Patricia Kopatchinskaja, David Geringas, António Meneses, Jan Lisiecki, António Rosado, Branford Marsalis, Boris Berezovky, David Russel, Elisabete Matos, Ute Lemper, to name a few, and he has worked with stage directors such as Terry Jones, Luís Miguel Cintra, Beatriz Batarda, André Teodósio, João Pedro Vaz, Maria Emília Correia, Ricardo Neves-Neves, António Pires, António Durães,the choreographers Olga Roriz, Fernando Duarte, Victor Hugo Pontes,Vasco Wellenkamp, Miguel Ramalho and with La Fura dels Baus.
